Frequently Asked Questions for the “New Normal” in Education

  • Synchronous learning refers to delivery of lessons to a group of students at the same time, usually done via Video Conference.
  • Asynchronous learning is each student studying on his/her own time (i.e. watching video or reading books not with the class).

JCCA does not condone bullying of any sort – including Cyber Bullying. Any student proven to have committed bullying will be given appropriate sanction depending on the severity of the offense. Parents are likewise advised to monitor their children’s gadgets and behavior to be able to address early any form of bullying being committed on their child

Online Parent-Teacher conference will be done at the schedule best for most participants. If any of the parents are not available at the chosen date, they can be given a copy of the video or have another schedule with the teacher(s) involved – at their available time.

Students can socialize during classes through the video conference or directly with each other through social media but until the government allows it, JCCA will not call for physical face-to-face interactions.

Quizzes and other activities can be time-bound per item which prevents students from searching for answers online. Other activities have randomized questions and choices to prevent students from exchanging answers with their classmates remotely. Lastly, Google has a feature that can reliably check for plagiarism and detect work pulled out from the internet. We plan to use all these features.

The answer varies from child to child. Although we can say that maturity plays a big role on whether a child can learn online independently, we suggest the following for the parents:
* Preschool to Grade 1 pupils – should be assisted in the whole duration of the online learning.
* Grade 2 and Grade 3 pupils – parents should try to test if their child can learn on their own. Let them control the classes with your supervision. Do not leave them during the classes.
* Grade 4 to Grade 6 pupils – parents should guide the children by reading the lesson objectives to them and make them explain it in their own words. Tell them what output is expected of them and make them repeat it in their own understanding. Their work should be checked every once in a while.
* Grade 7 above – capable to study independently but it is natural for the children to stray from their online classes if they are not supervised. Make them read the lesson objectives on their own and check if their understanding is correct. Check if they understand what they need to do and what output is expected of them. Check if the expected outputs are completed and submitted.

Aside from electronic learning materials, the school will also be providing textbooks to its students. This will allow students to study their lessons offline and without the use of any gadget. This also gives them the opportunity to enhance their writing skills. Online classes will be recorded and will be accessible to the respective students as necessary which can be downloaded and viewed when the gadgets are available.

As much as the school and its teachers can make lessons very interesting for the students, the environment where the child accepts the learning will play a vital role.
We advise parents to make it conducive for their children to study with the following tips:
– choose or designate a place where learning should happen and always use that area for study.
– the place you choose should be comfortable but not too much otherwise it might be more conducive for sleeping
– the place should ideally have natural light coming in. Studies show that exposure to natural light improves student behavior and mood for learning.
– make sure that all notifications from FB messenger and other applications on the mobile device are turned off during classes to prevent them from distracting the student.
– if possible, do not use that same area for playing or other activities not related to learning. This will help trigger the student’s mind to be in “study mode” whenever entering that area.
– maintain routines and rules in the home. Children will function better if they stay on a schedule and rules are implemented strictly.
– don’t forget to include breaks like snacks or recess in the schedule. Learning should not be associated with stress but rather with fun.
– make lessons short but deliberate. This will help avoid the child’s mind to wander off during online classes and not associate it with “boring and lengthy” activities.

(Update as of May 28) It is advisable for lessons to be limited to the following length:

– 20 minutes for Preschool 

– 25 minutes for Grade 1 to Grade 3

– 30 minutes for Grade 4 to Grade 6

– 35 minutes for Junior High School

These will also be the standard length of each online JCCA class.

We will make it a point that all online classes will be recorded and will be accessible to the respective students as necessary. These can be downloaded and viewed at a later time.

– It is still the teachers who will do the teaching. Although adult supervision and assistance may be needed to make sure students are properly paying attention or doing the activities correctly – especially the younger ones.

Updated as of May 21, 2020:
Face-to-face classes will only happen when the situation is already safe for children to come to school. Even if the government or Deped allows face-to-face classes but the cases are still high and there are no signs of the Covid virus being controlled, we will not allow it. If we are confident that the situation is already safe, physical face-to-face classes will be introduced gradually (i.e. once a week then twice a week then thrice a week). Nevertheless, JCCA is prepared in case the whole school year will be conducted online.
